Item numbers (SKU) and barcodes
What a SKU is, how Quid numbers your items, and how to use your own numbers or barcodes.
What is a SKU?
SKU stands for "stock keeping unit". It is the item's ID number inside your business, like 1304. Staff can type it into the register's search box instead of the name.
Quid numbers items for you
When you save a new item, Quid gives it the next free number in the range that belongs to its Type and Category. See Organise your items into groups (Types and Categories). You do not have to do anything.
Using your own numbers
If you already have item numbers and want to keep them, you have two choices:
- Easiest: let Quid number the items, and put your old number in the Barcode box of each item. The register finds an item by either number.
- Or switch the automatic numbering off: go to , set SKU Auto Numbering Enabled to No, and click Update Settings. From then on you type the SKU yourself on each new item.
We recommend the first choice. Automatic numbers can never clash.
Barcodes
The Barcode box on an item holds the number printed under the product's barcode. With a barcode scanner:
- When adding an item: click in the Barcode box and scan the product. The number is typed for you.
- When selling: click in Search Inventory on the register and scan. The item is added to the ticket.
A scanner is not required. Any USB or Bluetooth scanner that "types" the number like a keyboard will work. See Printers, scanners and cash drawers: what works with Quid.
Print a label for an item
Open the item, type how many Copies you want, and click Print Label. This needs a label printer. See Printers, scanners and cash drawers: what works with Quid.
