Printers, scanners and cash drawers: what works with Quid

What you need (very little), what is nice to have, and how each piece connects.

What you must have

Only a device with a web browser and internet. See What devices does Quid POS work on?. Everything else on this page is optional.

Receipt printer

Any printer your computer or tablet can print to will work. When you click the printer button in Quid, your browser's normal print window opens and you choose the printer. An ordinary office printer is fine to begin with.

A small thermal receipt printer is faster, quieter and uses cheap paper rolls with no ink. Common roll widths are 80 mm and 58 mm.

Quid also connects directly to Star Micronics network printers, which lets it print without the print window and open a cash drawer. Models we have tested:

ModelGood for
Star TSP100 (LAN)Receipts. Simple and reliable.
Star TSP700IIReceipts and sticky labels.
Star mPOPA receipt printer and cash drawer in one small unit.

Setup guide: Set up a Star Micronics network printer.

Cash drawer

A cash drawer normally plugs into the receipt printer, not into the computer. The printer opens it when a receipt prints. Check that the drawer's plug matches your printer's drawer socket before buying.

Barcode scanner

Almost any USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner works. To Quid, a scanner is just a very fast keyboard: it "types" the barcode number wherever the cursor is.

  • To sell: click in Search Inventory on the register, then scan.
  • To add an item: click in the Barcode box, then scan.

No setup is needed in Quid. See Item numbers (SKU) and barcodes.

Order printer (kitchen, bar, workshop, warehouse)

A second printer that prints what needs to be prepared or picked. See Print order slips for a kitchen, bar or workshop.

Label printer

Prints shelf or product labels from an item's page (Print Label). The Star TSP700II with "black mark" label rolls is the tested option.

Hardware in the menu lists the devices we have tested.

Tip

Buying new equipment? Ask your seller whether you can return it, then test it with Quid in the first few days. If you are unsure about a model, ask us before you buy.
